Our Story

A Portland Institution Since 1994

Marcus Holt planted the seeds of Apex Tree Service in 1994 with a single chainsaw and a truck borrowed from his father-in-law. Thirty years later, his son Eli leads operations alongside a team of ISA Certified Arborists who share the same commitment to excellence and respect for the trees they care for.

We've climbed the tallest Douglas firs in Lake Oswego backyards, removed storm-toppled oaks from Beaverton rooftops at 2am, and pruned heritage maples in Southwest Portland neighborhoods for over two decades. Every job gets the same care — whether it's one small tree or a 5-acre land clearing project.

Precision Pruning

Proper pruning is not just cutting branches — it's understanding how a tree grows, what it needs structurally, and how each cut will influence its future form and health. Every pruning cut we make follows ANSI A300 standards as interpreted by ISA Certified Arborists with decades of field experience.

We perform pruning for clearance, structure, light penetration, storm risk reduction, aesthetic form, and long-term health — often all at once.

  • Crown thinning for light and air circulation
  • Structural pruning for young tree development
  • Deadwood removal for safety and health
  • Crown lifting for clearance (structures, sightlines)
  • Vista pruning for views without over-removal
  • Heritage tree maintenance programs available

Storm Damage Response

Portland's winter storms are unpredictable and unforgiving. When a tree comes down on a structure, across a driveway, or when a major limb fails and creates an immediate hazard, we respond — day or night, 365 days a year. Our emergency crew is staged throughout the Metro area for fast response times.

We're experienced in working with homeowners' insurance companies, providing the documentation, photos, and reports that adjusters need to process claims smoothly.

  • 24/7/365 storm emergency response
  • Immediate hazard mitigation and securing
  • Full debris removal and cleanup
  • Insurance documentation and adjuster support
  • Damage reports with photographs
  • Follow-up structural assessment of remaining trees

Stump Grinding

That stump left behind after a tree removal is more than an eyesore — it's a tripping hazard, a potential pest habitat, and an obstacle for landscaping. Our stump grinders reduce any stump to below-grade mulch, leaving the area ready for sod, planting, or construction.

  • Any stump size from any tree species
  • Grinding to 10–12 inches below grade
  • Narrow-access equipment available for tight spaces
  • Backfill with grindings or topsoil (your choice)
  • Multiple stumps — volume discounts available
  • Surface root grinding available on request

Plant Health Care

A tree can look healthy and still be suffering below the surface. Our ISA Certified Arborists assess soil conditions, root zone health, pest pressure, and disease — then prescribe targeted treatments that address the root cause rather than masking symptoms.

Plant health care is especially critical for Portland's mature urban trees, which face compacted soils, construction impact, drought stress, and the ever-present threat of invasive pests.

  • Soil and root zone assessment
  • Deep root fertilization (macro and micronutrients)
  • Integrated pest management (IPM) programs
  • Fungal and bacterial disease diagnosis and treatment
  • Soil aeration and biostimulant application
  • Decline assessment and recovery planning

Land Clearing

Development, site preparation, or overgrown property reclamation — land clearing requires more than brute force. It requires knowledge of local tree protection ordinances, permit requirements, and the environmental considerations that govern clearing in the Portland Metro area.

Apex handles permits, coordinates with municipal arborists when required, and executes large-scale clearing efficiently with full chip and haul debris service.

  • Residential lot clearing for development
  • Commercial site preparation
  • Overgrown property reclamation
  • Tree protection ordinance navigation and permits
  • Brush and understory clearing
  • Full chip, haul, and cleanup
Land clearing — custom quoted based on site acreage and scope
ISA Professional Standards: All pruning performed by Apex Tree Service is conducted by ISA Certified Arborists following ANSI A300 (Part 1) Tree, Shrub, and Other Woody Plant Management Standards for Pruning. We do not perform "topping" or other practices that violate ISA standards and cause long-term tree damage.
FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Portland?

It depends on the tree and the situation. Portland requires permits for removal of trees with a trunk diameter over 5 inches in certain zones, for heritage trees, and for trees in protected corridors. We handle the permit application and navigation with the City of Portland's Urban Forestry division as part of our service — at no additional charge.

How long does a typical tree removal take?

A single residential tree typically takes 2–5 hours including full cleanup. Large trees or those requiring cranes may take 6–8 hours. We give you a time estimate during the site visit so you can plan accordingly. We work efficiently and without unnecessary delays.

What's the difference between a certified arborist and a regular tree service?

ISA Certified Arborists have passed a comprehensive exam covering tree biology, diagnosis, pruning standards, risk assessment, and safe work practices. They are required to maintain continuing education credits to stay certified. Many "tree services" employ uncertified workers who may not understand how improper cuts damage or kill trees. At Apex, every job is supervised by a certified arborist.

Will my insurance cover storm-damaged tree removal?

Often yes, if the fallen tree caused structural damage to your property. Most homeowners' policies cover removal costs in that scenario. We provide the detailed documentation, photos, and written reports that insurance adjusters require. We've worked with virtually every major insurer operating in Oregon and know what documentation they need.

When is the best time of year to prune my trees?

For most Portland species, late winter (February–March) before spring growth flush is ideal — wounds close quickly, pests are less active, and the tree's structure is clearly visible. Hazard pruning and deadwood removal can be done any time of year. Some species (like oaks) should only be pruned outside of certain seasons to minimize disease risk. Our arborists will advise on timing specific to your trees during the estimate.

Our Story

A Portland Institution Since 1994

Our History

Thirty Years in Portland's Trees

Marcus Holt started Apex Tree Service in 1994 out of a pickup truck and a deep respect for the Pacific Northwest's extraordinary urban forest. He'd spent four years working for other tree companies and two seasons as a wildland firefighter — gaining a practical understanding of how trees live, stress, and die that no classroom could provide.

In those early years, Marcus built his reputation one property at a time — showing up on time, cutting only what needed to be cut, leaving every yard cleaner than he'd found it, and taking the time to explain his decisions to homeowners who often felt anxious about their trees.

By 2005, Apex had grown to a team of eight and a fleet of four trucks. Marcus obtained his ISA Certification and made a commitment that every senior arborist on his team would do the same — a commitment that still holds today. When his son Eli joined operations in 2012 after studying urban forestry at Oregon State University, the business gained not just another pair of hands, but a new generation of scientific rigor.

Today, Apex Tree Service is one of Portland Metro's most trusted and established arboricultural firms. We've worked on everything from single ornamental trees to 40-acre land clearing projects — and we bring the same attention, integrity, and respect for living things to every single one.
